A Literary Link

There is an intriguing side-story related to Mamie arriving to take her mother, Julia, back to England. Mamie’s husband, Percy Stanley Blaker, was not able to join his wife on the trip to the Continent and instead sent his eighteen-year-old nephew, Richard Blaker, to escort her. Mamie was about thirty-one at the time. During the course of the trip, Richard and Mamie had an affair and she became pregnant. Never being one to beat around the bush, Mamie confessed all to her husband, Percy, and Percy, wishing to avoid family scandal, decided to hush the matter up. Percy Stanley Blaker acted as executor to James McGarvey’s will.

Richard Blaker went on to become a writer and produced a novel based loosely on James McGarvey’s adventures in the oil business from which his brother, William, the true petroleum baron, was expunged. Here Lies A Most Beautiful Lady was published in London in 1935 and became one of the year’s best-sellers. There was also a sequel, But Beauty Vanishes. The books provide valuable insight into life in the Grosny oil lands of the era.
